Imprisonment of women should be 'a last resort'

Experts and representatives of 30 countries, WHO and other organizations have endorsed the Kyiv Declaration, which states that criminal justice systems’ current arrangements for dealing with women offenders often fail to meet their basic and health needs, fall far short of meeting their human rights and should be urgently reviewed.

New training manual on environmental research

Working with key partners, WHO/Europe has just published a manual for young public health students on planning, conducting and publishing the findings of epidemiological research in environmental health. It draws on the experience of the Sumgayit Cancer Study in Azerbaijan; the international and Azeri researchers involved contributed directly to the manual and its toolkit, which includes model templates, budgets, a glossary and potential funding sources.

Climate change affecting health through food and water safety

A World Food Day event held in Rome, Italy today examines the spread of animal diseases such as bluetongue, and the possible increased use of agrichemicals. The event is held jointly by WHO/Europe, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and the European Food Safety Authority.
