CODE
OF ETHICAL AND PROFESSIONAL
STANDARDS |
As a multidisciplinary
group of professionals, the American
Academy of Experts in Traumatic
Stress has established
a Code of Ethical & Professional
Standards for practice across disciplines.
All Members must adhere to the code.
As a Member of the American
Academy of Experts in Traumatic
Stress , I pledge:
- To be committed to the advancement
of intervention for survivors
of trauma.
- To maintain the highest standards
of competence and professional
practice in my work with trauma
victims.
- To provide only those services
for which I am qualified by virtue
of my knowledge, experience and
education.
- To maintain my knowledge of
the research literature directly
related to the services I render.
- To respect the rights of individuals
to privacy and confidentiality.
- To never misrepresent my credentials,
education or membership status.
- To refrain from conduct that
would be adverse to the interest
and purpose of the Academy.
- To work toward increasing awareness
of traumatic stress and improving
treatment for survivors.
The Academy is multidisciplinary
and facilitates different professions
coming together under one umbrella.
I think that's a great virtue. The
cross-pollination that comes from
that kid of interaction can only
begin to generate a deeper understanding
of the phenomemon of traumatic stress
as it affects victims and survivors
of trauma ... the Academy, with
its diverse and international membership,
provides a forum for education,
training, publication and consultation.

of the
International Society of Traumatic

About
The Academy
The American Academy of Experts in Traumatic Stress®
is a multidisciplinary network of professionals
who are committed to the advancement of intervention
for survivors of trauma. The Academy aims to identify
expertise among professionals, across disciplines,
and provide meaningful standards for those who
work regularly with survivors. The Academy's Traumatic
Stress Library and publications provide practical
information for survivors of traumatic events
and those who care for them.
Today, our international membership includes individuals
from over 200 professions in the health-related
fields, emergency services, criminal justice,
forensics, law, business and education. With Members
in every state of the United States and over 55
foreign countries, our association is the largest
organization of its kind in the world.
The Academy defines traumatic stress as, “the
emotional, cognitive, behavioral, physiological
experience of individuals who are exposed to,
or who witness, events that overwhelm their coping
and problem-solving abilities." Our mission
is to increase awareness of the effects of traumatic
events and, ultimately, to improve the quality
of intervention with survivors.
Traumatic stress has many "faces.” In addition
to the devastating effects of large-scale disasters
and catastrophes, the Academy is committed to
fostering a greater appreciation of the effects
of day-to-day traumatic experiences (e.g., chronic
illness, accidents, domestic violence and loss).
Our aim is to help all victims to become
survivors and, ultimately, thrivers.
