AIHA’s First Fundamentals of IH Shanghai Course a Success
AIHA hosted 49 environmental health and safety practitioners from six Asia-Pacific countries, India, and Qatar participated in AIHA’s first ever Fundamentals of Industrial Hygiene training course in Shanghai, China.

Katharine Hammond, PhD, CIH

AIHA Presents Smyth Award to Katharine Hammond
The 2008 recipient of the Henry F. Smyth Jr. Award, Katharine Hammond, PhD, CIH, was recognized at the 2008 PCIH, November 8–11 in Tampa. AIHA’s Academy of Industrial Hygiene hosts PCIH. For more information, view the press release.

AIHA and OSHA Renew Alliance
AIHA and OSHA announced the renewal of the organizations’ alliance agreement for another two years. The two organizations will continue the strategic partnership with a focus on construction and general industry issues and emergency response. The extended relationship will encourage training, education, outreach, and communication and promote national dialogue on workplace safety and health. Click here for more information.

New AAB and TAP members to begin terms in January 2009
The AIHA Analytical Accreditation Board (AAB) is pleased to announce the results of its recent election. Larry Pierce, PhD, CIH and Sandra Cruz, MBA were selected by the AIHA Accredited laboratories that participated in the election and will serve 3 year terms beginning in January 2009. 

Seven new members were appointed to the Technical Advisory Panel for 3 year terms beginning in January 2009:

AIHA WEEL Committee Requesting Public Comments
AIHA WEEL Committee is requesting public comments on a new proposed Workplace Environmental Exposure Level (WEEL) for 2,3,3,3-Tetrafluoropropene (CAS# 754-12-1).  This document and proposed WEEL value may be found here. Written comments may be submitted to Mary Ann Latko, AIHA Director of Scientific and Technical Initiatives at (703) 846-0786 (p), or AIHA, 2700 Prosperity Avenue, Suite 250, Fairfax, VA 22031. All responses should be identified with Tetrafluoropropene WEEL and received by December 24, 2008.

Your Help Is Needed in Professions Survey
Please participate in the 2008 Pulse of the Professions Survey. The survey will capture the opinions that you and other IH and EHS professionals have on the current state of your careers within your organizations. It will also surface the developing trends and issues you are facing and help AIHA understand how to better meet your needs. The survey is sponsored by the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, the Tulane University Center for Applied Environmental Public Health and the Center for Environmental Innovation. Results of the survey will be published on the Pulse website.

AIHA Survey Names Top OEHS Issues
AIHA announced the results of its biennial membership survey that projects the top public policy issues of concern to AIHA members and the OEHS profession over the next two years.

AIHA Executive Director Departure; New Executive Director Hired
Steven H. Davis, CAE, IOM, will depart AIHA on March 31, 2009, after eleven years of service to the organization, the last six as executive director. The AIHA Board of Directors has retained Peter J. O’Neil, CAE, IOM, to assume the leadership of AIHA as Executive Director. O’Neil came to AIHA in 2000 as director, marketing and member services, and was promoted in 2005 to assistant executive director. You may view the official press release here.

AIHA Fellow
The AIHA Awards Committee is requesting nominations for the 2009 Fellow Awards. Each committee, local section, special interest group, and other formal AIHA entity may nominate, each year, a maximum of two individuals for the Fellow Award. The deadline for submissions is December 31, 2008. More information available on the AIHA awards page.

2009 AIHA Awards
Who should be recognized for outstanding service? Who has made significant contributions to the practice of industrial hygiene? The AIHA Awards committee welcomes your nominations. Information about each of these awards and the electronic submission form is available on the AIHA Awards page. The deadline for nominations is December 1.

Record Number of Presentation Submissions for AIHce 2009
AIHce 2009 reached a 10-year record with an outstanding number of presentation submissions. The theme for the conference, Discoveries Beyond Borders, and Toronto’s theme, The Creative City, have inspired a tremendous response in submissions – which is guaranteed to produce a vast and diverse technical program for 2009. The technical program will be available in early December, but in the meanwhile, take a sneak peak at the AIHce 2009 PDC titles that were recently approved.
