The Center for Environmental Health and Safety (CEHS) was formed to coordinate all activities associated with the environmental regulatory compliance for Southern Illinois University Carbondale.

The Center is comprised of four sections:
  • Environmental Compliance
  • Laboratory and Hazardous Waste
  • Occupational Health and Safety
  • Radiological Safety

Together, these sections work on monitoring Federal and State laws, determining their effects on the University, and advising proper action.  <more information>

September 17, 2007, Following an inspection by the Environmental Protection Agency, a notice of violation was issued to SIU on August 23, 2007. Guidelines for compliance are listed in the powerpoint presentation entitled “Hazardous Waste Compliance”; two necessary forms, the satellite waste accumulation area checklist and the laboratory emergency response plan, are also available here. Additional documents will be added in the coming weeks to assist laboratories to comply with the law. If you have questions regarding this topic, please e-mail aruffing@cehs.siu.edu.
