| | Fire Stress Team (FiST)
Chief Psychologist Erik De Soir of the Stress & Trauma Study Centre at the Belgian Royal Military Academy, who is also a member of the fire and ambulance services in Leopoldsburg, has been the driving force since 1993 behind the Firefighter & Medical Emergency Stress Teams (FiST), which are increasingly starting to work as part of multidisciplinary municipal or urban stress teams. The FiST concept is based on “providers of care to care-providers”. During members’ training, attention is devoted to caring for colleagues at all stages of an intervention and the subsequent period, recognising physical and/or emotional reactions to very extreme situations and giving advice to managers on taking the most vital decisions.
The site also contains a mission statement and general information about FiST. One section is devoted to the recognition of traumatic stress, the measures to be taken and what happens during a debriefing.
